Welcome to Small Wags! My name is Erica – a mom to three boys, wife to a great husband, and grateful “mom” to my little fur baby, Rocky. (That’s my youngest and Rocky in the picture).
We never planned to have a dog. We’d tried a pet here and there and it just didn’t suit our lifestyle. Having a pet is a huge commitment! With work, school, small children, and housecleaning, we just couldn’t pull it all together despite my having grown up with dogs and wanting to be a vet when I was a little girl.
But things change – thank goodness! The kids got older and I started my own business so I could work from home.
It was just at that point that my husband found a lost, little puppy in front of our house. He was shaking, wearing only a flea collar (no identification) and looked completely forlorn.
My husband brought him in and I held him to keep him warm while hubby went to the store for pet food. Over the course of the next week we took this little guy to the vet (no chip), hung posters in the neighborhood, posted that we’d found him online on lost/found pet websites, and waited for a call that never came.
Rocky – a Chihuahua mix – has been by my side almost every day since. He’ll be 5 in April and he’s changed my life.
Hubby knows that it was the time I spent holding Rocky while he went and did the harder work of getting dog food, chew bones, and toys that established the bond Rocky and I have. I think he regrets that he didn’t send me to the store that day but it is what it is (and I’m not complaining).
While Rocky doesn’t eat much people food he has a few favorites – bananas, peanut butter, scrambled eggs, and…french fries. He can smell fries before they even make it into the house!
When we leave and come back he acts as if he hasn’t seen us in ages, wiggling his little rear end all over the place and trying to get you to pet his head. I can go outside for just a few minutes to get the mail, come back and we do this little dance all over again. I wouldn’t have it any other way!
He’s blended into our lives like the little miracle he is. He’s quite spoiled with his own spot on the sofa (and a blanket there, to boot, because he likes super soft spaces), his own little cubby area in the living room with dog bed, toys, and more blankets, and he knows when he’s supposed to get a treat (and doesn’t let you forget).
Because of Rocky I’ve developed a special place in my heart for small dogs and he’s the inspiration for this site – a site filled with cute and comfy things for the small fur babies we’re fortunate to have in our lives.
